Listening to favorite music boosts physical performance
If you’re a Beyonce fan, plugging in your earphones to listen to «Countdown» while working out can make lifting weights feel considerably easier.
Listening to your favorite music can make you feel more «in the zone» and lessen perceived exertion during physical activities, a study conducted by the British Psychological Society has found.
«By playing their favorite tunes, we found that participants’ exertion levels reduced and their sense of being ‘in the zone’ increased, when compared to listening to no music at all. The greatest effects were found for music used during training,» research lead Dr. Alexandra Lamont from Keele University said.
After being surveyed on their favorite music, the study’s 64 participants were assessed before and during training, and before competitions, while listening to and in the absence of their favorite music. They were grouped based on their area of competitive sport — football, netball and running.
«If you are a Rihanna fan, for example, putting on her latest album could boost your performance and reduce perceived effort during training and before competing,» Lamont said of the findings.
Establishing the effect of listening to one’s favorite music on physical activities, the study builds on previous findings that motivational music in particular can boost physical performance.
