Touring the USA and other countries it is common for many Mexicans to be asked…

– Hey! where are you from?

The Mexican always responds with pride:

Hi, I’m from Mexico!

And they almost always answer:

– Aahh! The land of Chapo Guzmán, the narcos, marijuana, corruption, crimes and extortion …

And one assumes that he or she must be an addict.

True? And why?

Because if the guy were an athlete I would have identified myself with Ana Guevara, Hugo Sanchez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Finito López, El chicharito Hernández, Canelo Alvarez, Rafael Márquez, etc.

And if the good guy were cultured, I would have wondered about the great cultures like the Mayas, the Aztecs, the Olmecs, the Chichimecas.

And if the good guy would had traveled – I mean culturally, not a bad trip – they would ask me about our archaeological ruins, colonial cities, the great megalopolises or our exuberant beaches, or even about our biodiversity of jungles, beaches, deserts or forests.

Or maybe I would have identified whith our great painters Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Frida Khalo, José Clemente Orozco, or our composers: Agustín Lara, Consuelo Velázquez, Armando Manzanero, Juan Gabriel, José Alfredo Jiménez, or our writers and poets: Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Juan Rulfo, Octavio Paz, Juan José Arreola, Elena Poniawtoska, Amado Nervo, Jaime Sabines, or our inventions and authors: Manuel Mondragón, Guillermo González Camarera, Luis Ernesto Miramontes, our filmmakers: Ismael Rodríguez, Emilio Fernández, Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Emmanuel Lubezki and even Luis Buñuel in his Spanish version adopted the Mexican nationality.

And if the good and lucky guy was a gourmet I would have asked about the Tamales, the Cochinita Pibil, the Mole, the Adobo, the chilaquiles, the Chiles en nogada, the Guacamole, the Pan de Muerto, etc. For our drinks: pulque, tequila, mezcal, wines and beers.

However, I see that you only know about the provider of your addiction!

I just want to put on the discussion on the table, that Mexico is much more than what people believe.

That there are many honest Mexicans out there, that even if you do not know us, we will open the doors of our home to you and you will love to know us and visit us, because Mexico is simply much more wonderful than I can tell you !!
