Una encuesta de Ipsos Global sobre la felicidad en el mundo reveló que más de tres cuartas partes de los encuestados dijeron ser felices con sus vidas y cerca de una cuarta parte se describieron a sí mismos como «muy felices».

México registró que el 43 por ciento de las personas dicen ser muy felices, un 10 por ciento más que en 2007, lo que indica por un lado que las tribulaciones económicas, desastres naturales y violencia no fueron del todo contempladas y por el otro, que ser feliz es una pregunta que pueden basar en factores muy simples.

Las ciudades menos felices son Hungría, Corea del Sur, Rusia, España e Italia, y por regiones las más felices se dieron en América Latina, seguida de Asia-Pacífico, Medio Oriente y África. Sólo un 15 % de los europeos dijeron ser muy felices.

John Wright, vicepresidente de Ipsos Global, destacó que la felicidad cambia de lugar a lugar. «A veces, las mayores razones para ser feliz son cocinar la cena o tener un techo sobre tu cabeza», explicó. «Las relaciones personales siguen siendo la razón número uno en todo el mundo por la que la gente se siente feliz, y tal vez, en estas culturas la familia tiene un nivel de impacto mucho mayor.

Ipsos Global, which has surveyed the happiness of more than 18,000 people in 24 countries. More than three-quarters of people around the globe who were questioned in an international poll said they were happy with their lives and nearly a quarter described them as very happy.

Brazil and Turkey rounded out the top five happiest nations, while Hungary, South Korea, Russia, Spain and Italy had the fewest number of happy people.

Perhaps proving that money can’t buy happiness, residents of some of the world biggest economic powers, including the United States, Canada and Britain, fell in the middle of the happiness scale.

Regionally Latin America had the highest number of happy people, followed by North America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa. Only 15 per cent of Europeans said they were very happy.

Married couples tended to be happier than singles but men seemed to be as content as women. Education and age also had an impact with more people under 35 saying they are very happy than 35-49 year olds. Higher education also equated with higher happiness.

“There is a pattern that suggests that there are many other factors beyond the economy that make people happy, so it does provide one element but it is not the whole story,” said Wright.

“Sometimes the greatest happiness is a cooked meal or a roof over your head,” he explained. “Relationships remain the No 1 reason around the world where people say they have invested happiness and maybe in those cultures family has a much greater degree of impact.”
