Todo está listo para el 12 de febrero, la noche de los Grammy, uno de los premios más importantes de la industria de la música.

La entrega de los premios Grammy del próximo domingo podría convertirse en la noche de Adele. La joven cantante británica llega a la ceremonia con seis nominaciones, y todas ellas en las principales categorías: disco, canción, grabación, artista pop, álbum y vídeo. Su disco «21» y su canción «Rolling In The Deep» podrían ser los protagonistas absolutos de la noche. Su disco es número uno en Estados Unidos desde hace 18 semanas. En conjunto, los ingresos de «21» y «19» (su primer trabajo) supusieron en 2011 el 2 por ciento de las ventas en el sector musical estadounidense.

En realidad, el rapero Kanye West tiene incluso una nominación más que Adele, pero quien podría hacerle verdadera sombra a la cantante de 23 años es Bruno Mars, de 26, que también recibió seis nominaciones.

Los Foo Fighters consiguieron también seis candidaturas pero el resto de favoritos van muy por detrás de ambos: Lady Gaga compite sólo por tres Grammy (entre ellos a mejor álbum) y Katy Perry podría conseguir como máximo dos. El grupo triunfador de la pasada edición, Lady Antebellum, únicamente está nominado al premio a mejor álbum de música country.

En la categoría de mejor álbum latino (pop, rock o urban), se disputan el Grammy los puertorriqueños Calle 13 («Entren los que quieran»), los mexicanos Maná («Drama y Luz») y Gustavo Galindo («Entre la ciudad y el mar») y los venezolanos La Vida Bohème («Nuestra») y Los Amigos Invisibles («Not So Commercial»).

La gala, que este año será conducida por el rapero LL Cool J, contará con otro protagonista, el fallecido cofundador de Apple Steve Jobs. La Academia de Grabaciones Discográficas de Estados Unidos le entregará un Grammy honorífico póstumo por su contribución a la industria musical.

Although Kanye West is the lead nominee this year, up for seven Grammys, he’s not going to be the star of Sunday’s broadcast. Instead, Britain’s soul-singing sensation Adele is shaping up to be the central figure, a twist of fate that must irk the ambitious rapper.

Rosy-cheeked Adele Laurie Blue Adkins is nominated for a half-dozen awards, tied with Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars. But the spotlight is on Adele because she’s scheduled to perform on the telecast – which will be the 23-year-old’s first performance since she had surgery on her vocal cords five months ago.

Millions of fans around the world don’t give a hoot about how many awards she wins; they’re crossing their fingers that she can still sing as she does on her hit album 21.

The second studio album by Adele was the sleeper hit of 2011, a set of blues- and gospel-drenched soul songs that connected with listeners in a big way, largely because of the emotional resonance of her incredible voice and her heart-wrenching breakup tales. It has sold millions, achieving the No. 1 spot in countries around the world. A landmark album that has revitalized the entire industry, 21 has also served to make a case for the power of natural talent.

Heading into the Grammy Awards on Sunday, Adele is poised to sweep the top three categories, with nominations for album of the year, record of the year and song of the year. If she wins all three, which I predict she will, she would be the first artist to do so since the Dixie Chicks in 2007.

West, on the other hand, was shut out of the album and record categories, although his co-writing credit on All of the Lights makes him a contender for song of the year. The song, which features West with Rihanna, Kid Cudi and Fergie, is also nominated for best rap/sung collaboration and best rap song.

What’s bumped up the number of West’s nominations is the fact that he produced two albums, and both earned recognition. West’s own My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is competing for best rap album, as is Watch the Throne, his collaboration with Jay-Z. The West/Jay-Z track Otis is nominated for best rap performance and best rap song.

If you’re wondering what happened to the Canadian contingent this year, you can chalk up the weak representation to a combination of bad timing and fewer categories.

Last year, the Recording Academy restructured the awards, cutting the number of categories to 78, down from 109. Many of the cuts took place in the genre-specific categories. Instead of separate categories for polka and Native American music, for example, submissions are now funnelled
