Una investigación británica confirmó aquel dicho de «el dinero no compra la felicidad». En el estudio, se demostró que los británicos más felices se encuentran en el norte de Escocia en una pequeña área del centro de Inglaterra, Rutland, que supera en bienestar personal a otras zonas de igual riqueza, como Wokingham, al sureste del país. Así lo concluyó una investigación gubernamental que demuestra que al comparar dos zonas con niveles económicos similares, los niveles de satisfacción o felicidad no necesariamente coincidían.

Los investigadores compararon los indicadores de bienestar con los ingresos que tiene cada hogar, que se han visto reducidos a niveles de 2005 y que reflejan mejor la felicidad nacional que el PIB del país.

Con todo, son otros factores los que determinan la satisfacción ciudadana, como señalan los propios participantes en el estudio, entre ellos la salud mental y física, la familia, la autonomía o el tiempo libre.

Un total de 200.000 personas formaron parte de esta investigación, llevada a cabo por la Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas (ONS) y que arrancó en abril de 2011. A todas ellas se les pidió que respondieran con un número del 0 al 10 a cuatro preguntas: «¿Está feliz con su vida actualmente?», «¿se sintió feliz ayer?», «¿se sintió preocupado ayer?» y «¿hasta qué punto cree que lo que hace en su vida merece la pena?».

El estudio fue financiada por el Gobierno británico con un presupuesto anual de 2,5 millones de euros y pretende averiguar una forma precisa de medir la felicidad y el bienestar.

David Halpern, de la Oficina del Gabinete Cabinet Office, dijo: «Parece que si puedes ver un árbol, eres más feliz. Rutland está cerca de unos lagos, así que creemos que el entorno marca la diferencia».

La crisis, no obstante, ha pasado factura a los ciudadanos británicos y, pese a que el Producto Interno Bruto del Reino Unido no ha dejado de crecer desde 2009, la satisfacción y la felicidad han ido disminuyendo.

The credit crunch has not had an adverse effect on the happiness of Britons, newly-released data revealed today.

As the Office for National Statistics released its first full report under the national well-being programme, it emerged that the national mood has remained resilient in the face of the recession.

Although the financial crisis led to a higher proportion of unemployment, particularly on the young, overall ‘life satisfaction’ has remained broadly stable during the last decade.
The survey results also showed that those in the Outer Hebrides, Shetlands and Orkney Islands were among the happiest in Britain, compared to residents of London, Edinburgh, Luton, Reading, and Slough, who had the lowest happiness ratings.

The data is the result of a programme initiated by David Cameron, who commissioned a ‘happiness index’ two years ago to assess the state of the nation.

The Prime Minister will be encouraged by other findings from the ONS, which also suggest our ‘healthy’ life expectancy has increased, as has our overall satisfaction with our health.

Three-quarters of respondents (75.9%), also gave a medium or high level of satisfaction with their lives overall. Economically, the data shows that despite Britain’s plunging GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and RNNI (Real National Net Income) after the credit crunch in 2008, the general mood of the UK actually went up. The survey also reported that one in eight (12.3%) find it quite or very difficult to get by financially.
