Millonario australiano construirá un Titanic »insumergible»
Clive Palmer, un millonario australiano, anunció sus planes para construir una versión «insumergible» del Titanic, 100 años después de que el original se hundiera tras chocar con un iceberg.
Se espera que el Titanic II haga su travesía de inaguración desde Inglaterra a América del Norte, (la misma ruta que hizo el viejo Titanic), a finales del 2016.
«Va a ser diseñado para que no se hunda», dijo el magnate minero y del turismo a periodistas. «Será diseñado como un barco moderno con toda la tecnología que garantice que no ocurra (un hundimiento)», agregó.
El Titanic original, el transatlántico más grande del mundo cuando fue botado y considerado en su época «insumergible», se hundió tras chocar con un iceberg el 15 de abril de 1912, provocando la muerte de mil 517 pasajeros y tripulación.
Palmer dijo que su nueva empresa marítima, Blue Star Line Pty Ltd, había firmado un memorandum de compromiso con la empresa estatal china CSC Jinling Shipyard para construir el Titanic II. El barco original estaba operado por la naviera White Star Line.
El trabajo de diseño para el nuevo Titanic ya ha empezado y el barco tendrá las mismas dimensiones que la versión antigua, con 840 habitaciones y nueve cubiertas.

Saying that «of course it will sink if you put a hole in it,» Australia’s wealthiest business executive today announced he has contracted with a Chinese shipbuilder to construct a replica of the Titanic. Mining magnate Clive Palmer also, as The Sydney Morning Herald reports, said he’s planning to run for a seat in Australia’s parliament.

Australian Broadcasting Corp. calls Palmer «the human whoopee cushion of Australian politics» and says that «never before has such an ambitious non-sequitur been attempted in the field of Australian enterprise» — a run for office combined with an audacious new business venture. Perhaps the appropriate American comparison would be to Donald Trump.
As for the Titanic II, according to the Morning Herald: «Mr Palmer said his new company Blue Star Line Pty Ltd had commissioned the state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build a near replica of the ill-fated Titanic. The cost is unknown. «It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems,’ he said.»
Palmer is hoping the ship will be ready to sail in 2016, the BBC says, and the first passenger-carrying voyage would be from London to New York.
