La piratería no hace daño al cine, al menos en Estados Unidos. Esa es la conclusión de un estudio de la Universidad de Minnesota realizado desde el año 2000, tres años antes de la aparición de BitTorrent, el mayor difusor de contenidos P2P.

El estudio, sin embargo, reconoce en este periodo una caída de recaudación de un 7% de la industria de Hollywood fuera de Estados Unidos, aunque los autores del trabajo lo atribuyen al retraso que hay entre los estrenos en el país de origen y el estreno en el resto del mundo. Cuando más se tarda en poner la película en un país, más se piratea esa película.

Study: Hollywood Not Losing Much To Piracy After All

Hollywood is guilty of engendering and encouraging piracy; this according to a new study that was carried out by two economic professors from Wellesley College and the University of Minnesota. The study tries to find some correlations between the launch invention and launch of the BitTorrent and the rise of piracy with the claimed diminishing returns of Hollywood.

The study tracks box office earnings both in the US as well as in other major capitals in the world and measures these to compare the earnings before BitTorrent piracy and after. It turns out that there isn’t a significant dent in Box Office earnings in the US at all. The comparison shows that the launch of the BitTorrent did not have any significant effect on Box Office earnings in the US although there was a 7% dip in international earnings owing to the the same.

In as much as the study could not specifically determine whether this dip was entirely due to the launch of BitTorrent, the correlation is fairly admissible. The study continues by laying the major cause of pirating at Hollywood’s doorstep owing to the different launch dates of movies in different parts of the world. The study shows that the risk for pirating rises as the time between a US début and international début becomes protracted.

This demonstrates that audiences around the world became impatient and more likely to pirate content if there is no local access to the same. This echoes the issues many Bit Torrent websites, including the Pirate Bay, have been saying, which is that piracy is driven by lack of accessibility rather than a lack of respect for copyright laws and pure evil.
