El nuevo dispositivo podr\u00eda asemejarse al iPhone est\u00e1ndar, pero con una carcasa diferente y menos costosa, se\u00f1al\u00f3 una persona.<\/p>\n

Una posibilidad que est\u00e1 considerando es reducir el costo del tel\u00e9fono usando una carcasa diferente, hecho de policarbonato. El iPhone 5, en cambio, tiene un exterior de aluminio. <\/p>\n

Muchas otras partes podr\u00edan permanecer iguales o ser recicladas de modelos previos del iPhone. <\/p>\n

Apple a\u00fan podr\u00eda decidir cancelar el plan. Una vocera de la empresa de Cupertino, California, no quiso comentar al respecto. <\/p>\n

Apple enfrenta una mayor presi\u00f3n para hacer que el iPhone sea m\u00e1s asequible. Una ola de rivales m\u00e1s econ\u00f3micos que operan con el software Android, de Google Inc., est\u00e1 ganando participaci\u00f3n de mercado. <\/p>\n

En el tercer trimestre del a\u00f1o pasado, Apple ten\u00eda s\u00f3lo 14,6% de los env\u00edos de tel\u00e9fonos inteligentes a nivel mundial, frente a un m\u00e1ximo de 23% en el cuarto trimestre de 2011 y el primer trimestre de 2012, seg\u00fan IDC. <\/p>\n

La cuota de mercado de Samsung Electronics Co., mientras tanto, subi\u00f3 de 8,8% a 31,3% desde el tercer trimestre de 2010 al tercer trimestre de 2012.<\/p>\n

Though Apple hasn\u2019t exactly lost enough ground to consider itself in immediate danger, Android devices \u2014 in particular, those produced by Samsung \u2014 have certainly taken control of a large chunk of the mobile market, partly due to some Android phones being much less expensive than an iPhone, and partly because some people like having an alternative to what was once the only game in town. If you take a quick look through Apple\u2019s device history, you can see that it has produced cheaper alternatives before: the iPod branched off into the Nano and Shuffle lines, the iMac branched off into the Mac Mini, and late last year the iPad branched off into the iPad Mini. The only two flagship Apple product lines left to branch off into a cheaper \u201clite\u201d alternative are the iPhone and MacBook, so a cheaper iPhone wouldn\u2019t come as much of a surprise.<\/p>\n

So, if Apple is releasing a cheaper iPhone, what features would it cut in order to reduce the price? WSJ is reporting that Apple could switch the body of the phone from aluminum to cheaper polycarbonate plastic. If we\u2019re taking lessons from the iPad Mini, Apple could also avoid including a Retina display in the cheaper iPhone, and reduce the phone\u2019s size a bit as well. <\/p>\n

It might seem odd for Apple to release a smaller phone right after it finally went the route of the bigger phone with the iPhone 5, but Apple just released a smaller version of its tablet, so a smaller phone isn\u2019t out of the question. Reducing camera quality and storage capacity are also easy targets to help reduce cost, and using the older A5 SoC rather than the iPhone 5\u2032s A6 could also help cut costs. <\/p>\n
