‘Dirty Harry,’ ‘The Matrix’ added to US film archive<\/strong>
\nClint Eastwood cop drama \u201cDirty Harry,\u201d sci-fi epic \u201cThe Matrix\u201d and timeless romantic comedy \u201cBreakfast at Tiffany\u2019s\u201d are among 25 films being added to the US National Film Registry.<\/p>\n\u201cThe Times of Harvey Milk,\u201d a 1984 documentary about the life and assassination of San Francisco\u2019s first openly gay lawmaker, will also join classics like \u201cCitizen Kane\u201d and \u201cCasablanca\u201d in America\u2019s official film archive, the registry announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Librarian of Congress James Billington said the National Film Registry, established in 1989, \u201cspotlights the importance of preserving America\u2019s unparalleled film heritage.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese films are not selected as the \u2019best\u2019 American films of all time, but rather as works of enduring importance to American culture. They reflect who we are as a people and as a nation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
To qualify for possible inclusion films have to be at least 10 years old and \u201cculturally, historically or esthetically\u201d significant, said the registry, part of the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Matrix\u201d from 1999 is the most recent of the new additions, while 1971\u2019s \u201cDirty Harry\u201d is probably the most popular and classic in the mainstream sense of the word.<\/p>\n
\u201cBreakfast at Tiffany\u2019s,\u201d starring Audrey Hepburn as New York society girl Holly Golightly and with a screenplay co-written by Truman Capote from his own novella, dates from 1961.<\/p>\n
Others chosen to join are less well known: they include \u201cUncle Tom\u2019s Cabin\u201d (1914), which features the first black actor to star in a feature-length US film, and \u201cOne Survivor Remembers,\u201d a 1995 short about a Holocaust survivor.<\/p>\n
\u201cA Christmas Story\u201d (1983) is based on humorist Jean Shepherd\u2019s \u201cIn God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash,\u201d while \u201cAnatomy of a Murder\u201d (1959) broke barriers due to its blunt language and willingness to openly discuss adult themes.<\/p>\n
More well known perhaps are 1957 western \u201c3:10 to Yuma\u201d and \u201cBorn Yesterday\u201d (1950), featuring an Oscar-winning turn from Judy Holliday,\u201d while 1991\u2019s \u201cSlacker\u201d marked the blossoming of American independent cinema in the 1990s.<\/p>\n
The National Film Registry was created in 1989 and now has some 600 movies dating from 1897 to 1999, with 25 new ones chosen each year. <\/p>\n
