De acuerdo a una investigaci\u00f3n realizada en el Reino Unido, los casos de mujeres con c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n aumentaron en un 125% entre 1975 y 2009, cuando alcanzaron los 18.000, un dato que los expertos de \u00abCancer Research UK\u00bb atribuyen al tabaquismo de la d\u00e9cada de los a\u00f1os sesenta.<\/p>\n
Si bien la incidencia del c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n entre las mujeres ha aumentado desde 1975, la de los hombres ha seguido la tendencia contraria, seg\u00fan las estad\u00edsticas publicadas por esta organizaci\u00f3n ben\u00e9fica dedicada a la investigaci\u00f3n del c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n
Entre las mujeres, la incidencia de la enfermedad desde 1975 creci\u00f3 de 22,2 casos por cada 100.000 mujeres (cuando los diagn\u00f3sticos ascendieron a alrededor de 8.000), hasta los 39,3 en 2009, (cuando superaron los 18.000). Los expertos atribuyen el gran incremento entre las mujeres a que en los a\u00f1os sesenta el porcentaje de fumadoras alcanz\u00f3 el 45 por ciento, una tasa que ha descendido un 20 por ciento desde entonces, pero que a\u00fan tiene consecuencias sobre su salud.<\/p>\n
\u00abLos \u00faltimos datos subrayan el impacto mortal del tabaco. El alza continua de casos de c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n en las mujeres coincide con el alto n\u00famero de ellas que fumaban hace varias d\u00e9cadas, cuando la actitud hacia el tabaco era diferente\u00bb, explic\u00f3 Jean King, directora de control del tabaquismo de la organizaci\u00f3n Cancer Research UK.<\/p>\n

\nCases of the disease are still rising in women where as they have peaked and are now falling in men, Cancer Research UK has found.
\nLung cancer can take twenty to thirty years to develop and reach a stage where symptoms start appearing and it can be detected by scans and X-rays.
\nIn 1975 there were 22 cases of lung cancer for every 100,000 women, with 8,000 women diagnosed with the disease and this had increased to 39 per 100,000 or 18,000 cases in 2009.
\nThis corresponds to women who took up smoking in the 1960s, the era depicted in the TV series Mad Men when women smoking was seen as the glamorous and normal, even when pregnant, the charity said.
\nIn the 1960s, almost half of women smoked compared to one in five now.

\nSmoking was popular among men earlier, with around 65 per cent smoking during the Second World War and this has now dropped to 22 per cent.
\nAs a result lung cancer in men is now dropping from its peak in the 1970s to reach 59 cases per 100,000 in 2009 or 23,000 diagnoses.
\nThe new figures also reveal that the total number of UK lung cancer deaths stands at almost 35,000 last year, the biggest cancer killer.
\nJean King, Cancer Research UK\u2019s director of tobacco control, said: \u201cThese latest figures highlight the deadly impact of tobacco. The continuing rise of lung cancer in women reflects the high number of female smokers several decades ago when attitudes were different.
\n\u00abTobacco advertising hasn\u2019t appeared on UK television since 1965, but that didn\u2019t stop the marketing of cigarettes.
