El gigante de la red, Google sent\u00f3 al volante de su auto con piloto autom\u00e1tico a un invidente con el fin de probar el funcionamiento de su prototipo, inform\u00f3 hoy la compa\u00f1\u00eda, que public\u00f3 un video en YouTube con la experiencia.<\/p>\n

La grabaci\u00f3n titulada \u00abSelf-Driving Car Test: Steve Mahan\u00bb muestra el viaje de Steve Mahan, un hombre con una discapacidad visual de un 95 %, en un recorrido por su ciudad a bordo de un Toyota Prius equipado con tecnolog\u00eda de Google para autoconducci\u00f3n.
\n\u00abEstoy muy por encima de lo que se considera estar legalmente ciego\u00bb, coment\u00f3 Mahan en las im\u00e1genes, en las que explica c\u00f3mo la p\u00e9rdida de visi\u00f3n le impide hacer cosas que antes pod\u00eda hacer y el papel que podr\u00eda jugar un autom\u00f3vil como el de Google en su d\u00eda a d\u00eda.<\/p>\n

\u00abEsto me dar\u00eda la independencia y la flexibilidad para ir a lugares donde tengo que ir y quiero ir cuando necesite hacer cosas\u00bb, asegur\u00f3 Mahan.
\nEn su desplazamiento Mahan hizo dos paradas, una en el carril de acceso para veh\u00edculos de un establecimiento de comida r\u00e1pida donde hizo un pedido y tambi\u00e9n se detuvo en el aparcamiento de una lavander\u00eda para recoger ropa.<\/p>\n

En el v\u00eddeo se ve c\u00f3mo el volante gira solo y el coche circula siguiendo las normas de tr\u00e1fico mientras que Mahan come tranquilo lo que acaba de encargar.

Sometimes it feels all too easy to succumb to cynicism when looking at the cutthroat competition in the tech world, but a new video from Google that demonstrates its self-driving car is more than enough to lead one’s heart back to the optimism inherent in human technology. In the video, Google employees pick up Steve Mahan, a man who’s lost 95 percent of his vision, and put him behind the wheel \u2014 and from the moment the car starts up to a gentle robotic voice that announces \u00abauto driving,\u00bb it’s clear that this ride is going to be unlike any other you’ve seen. Steve explains how \u00abyou lose your timing in life, everything takes you much longer\u00bb \u2014 \u00abthere are some places that you cannot go, there are some things that you really cannot do.\u00bb <\/p>\n

But it’s clear that for Steve, who’s able to order a drive-through burrito and pick up his dry cleaning, that this could be an utterly uplifting technology, and one more imminent than some could have imagined.<\/p>\n

Google announced its self-driving car project back in 2010, and since then it says it has safely completed over 200,000 miles of computer-led driving. Others like BMW, Audi, Toyota, and university engineers are working on their own versions of computer-controlled driving systems, too. And with states like Nevada easing into the use of self-driving cars on public roads with recently approved regulations, the concept seems to be gaining legitimate traction in the public eye. Google says that it organized the test as a \u00abtechnical experiment outside of our core research efforts,\u00bb but that \u00abit’s also a promising look at what this kind of technology may one day deliver for society\u00bb \u2014 a promise that could one day allow those like Steve to experience the joy of driving, and more importantly, the dignity of self-determination in ways they never thought possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
