Cient\u00edficos de Estados Unidos desarrollaron un nuevo tratamiento contra el melanoma que ampl\u00eda la expectativa de vida a 16 meses de un paciente con c\u00e1ncer de piel, cuando el promedio con tratamiento tradicional es de nueve meses.<\/p>\n
Los especialistas estadounidenses informaron de su hallazgo al New England Journal of Medicine: m\u00e1s de 130 pacientes medicados con Vemurafenib ganaron varios meses de vida.<\/p>\n
El tratamiento de Vemurafenib, cuyo nombre comercial es Zelboraf, le puede servir a casi la mitad de pacientes con un grado avanzado de melanoma, puesto que ataca tumores que expresan mutaciones de gen.<\/p>\n
\u201cEste estudio muestra que Zelboraf cambia la historia natural de esta enfermedad. Sus resultados van m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los que hubi\u00e9ramos podido esperar, dijo Antoni Ribas, profesor de hematolog\u00eda y oncolog\u00eda e investigador del Centro Jonsson de C\u00e1ncer de la Universidad de California.<\/p>\n
Tuvieron que pasar 10 a\u00f1os antes de que un nuevo tratamiento fuera realizado y aprobado para curar el c\u00e1ncer de piel; da esperanza a quienes sufren el melanoma en su \u00faltima etapa.<\/p>\n

Researchers used the drug Vemurafenib (Zelboraf) on patients and found that they lived for 16 months on average as compared to those who underwent conventional treatment and survived for only nine months on average.<\/p>\n
This drug is one of the two drugs used in the later stages of melanoma, a type of skin cancer, raising hope for people with the disease. This drug comes after a decade of research and will radically change the way patients with advanced melanoma are treated.<\/p>\n
What makes this drug even more hopeful is the fact that it targets the tumours that express a certain gene mutation in advanced melanoma.<\/p>\n
\u00abThis study shows that Zelboraf changes the natural history of this disease. This data is beyond what I would have expected,\u00bb BBC quoted Dr. Antoni Ribas, professor of haematology\/oncology and a researcher at the Jonsson Cancer Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, as saying.<\/p>\n
\u00abWe’re seeing a significant number of patients with durable responses to the drug, and that the whole group of treated patients is living longer,\u00bb said Ribas. \u00abThese results tell us that this drug is having a very big impact, and this changes the way we treat metastatic melanoma.\u00bb<\/p>\n
