\u00abEl humor es un componente muy importante de la salud emocional, ya que mantiene las relaciones, desarrolla la funci\u00f3n cognitiva (del cerebro) e incluso quiz\u00e1s la salud m\u00e9dica\u00bb, dice el autor principal del estudio, doctor Allan Reiss, director del Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n en Ciencias Interdisciplinarias del Cerebro de la Universidad de Stanford. Un sentido del humor fuerte es parte importante de la emoci\u00f3n positiva y podr\u00eda ayudar a que los ni\u00f1os fueran m\u00e1s resistentes.<\/p>\n
Los investigadores escanearon los cerebros de 15 ni\u00f1os de 6 a 12 a\u00f1os de edad mientras ve\u00edan v\u00eddeos cortos que se clasificaron como divertidos, positivos o neutrales. Los esc\u00e1neres cerebrales mostraron que los v\u00eddeos graciosos activan dos regiones del cerebro de los ni\u00f1os que tambi\u00e9n responden al humor en los adultos pero no est\u00e1n tan desarrollados en los menores. El humor activaba la regi\u00f3n mesol\u00edmbica de los ni\u00f1os, que procesa las recompensas, y el \u00e1rea temporal-occipital-parietal, que procesa las incongruencias, es decir, cosas que van unidas pero representan opuestos (por ejemplo, un payaso que sale de un coche min\u00fasculo).<\/p>\n

Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have shown that parts of the brain network that react to humor in an adult are already present in children ages six to 12. These neural circuits, while present in children, develop into more sophisticated networks as children mature, according to a statement on the School of Medicine\u2019s website.<\/p>\n
The research team studied the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain scans of six- to 12-year-old children who watched short video clips. The children in the study were of average intelligence or higher and did not have any psychiatric or developmental problems. The researchers used videos in three categories to evaluate the brain activity: funny, positive and neutral.<\/p>\n
According to the School of Medicine\u2019s statement, the funny videos were intended to be rewarding and positive to watch while the positive videos were only intended to be rewarding. The neutral videos were intended to be neither funny nor rewarding.<\/p>\n
The researchers found that the funny videos activated two regions in the children\u2019s brains that are also activated in adults\u2019 brains when they view funny material. However, an area of the brain known as the temporal-occipital-parietal junction, which processes perceived incongruities, was activated in both the left and right hemispheres of the children\u2019s brains. This area is only activated on the left side of the brain in adult subjects reacting to similar material. Humor also activated the brain\u2019s mesolimbic regions, which process rewards.<\/p>\n
The research team included Allan Reiss, director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences Research at Stanford, and Michelle Neely \u201911, currently a Cornell medical student.
