Twitter indic\u00f3 en su blog en ingl\u00e9s que entrar\u00e1 a nuevos pa\u00edses que tienen distintas ideas sobre los l\u00edmites de la libertad de expresi\u00f3n y que \u00abalgunos difieren tanto de nuestras ideas que no podremos existir all\u00ed\u00bb. <\/p>\n
\u00abOtros son similares, pero por razones culturales o hist\u00f3ricas restringen ciertos tipos de contenido, como Francia o Alemania, que proh\u00edben contenido pronazi\u00bb. <\/p>\n
\u00abHasta ahora, la \u00fanica forma en que pod\u00edamos tomar en cuenta los l\u00edmites de esos pa\u00edses era remover el contenido a nivel global. Desde hoy nos permitimos la habilidad de reaccionar y retener contenido de usuarios en un pa\u00eds en espec\u00edfico, al mismo tiempo que lo dejamos disponible para el resto del mundo\u00bb. <\/p>\n
Twitter a\u00f1adi\u00f3 que dise\u00f1\u00f3 una forma para comunicarles a los usuarios de manera transparente cu\u00e1ndo y por qu\u00e9 se retiene su contenido. <\/p>\n
Aunque asegura que todav\u00eda no ha recurrido a esta medida, indic\u00f3 que marcar\u00e1 los comentarios vetados. <\/p>\n
Twitter, adem\u00e1s de otras redes sociales como Facebook, jug\u00f3 un papel vital y controversial en la organizaci\u00f3n de todo tipo de eventos relevantes del a\u00f1o pasado, desde la Primavera \u00c1rabe a los disturbios en Londres, seg\u00fan el experto en tecnolog\u00eda de la BBC, Rory Cellan-Jones. <\/p>\n
Sin embargo, el servicio de los 140 caracteres -que tiene m\u00e1s de 100 millones de usuarios activos- tambi\u00e9n ha tenido que encontrar en el proceso un balance entre leyes locales y la libertad de expresi\u00f3n. <\/p>\n

Twitter may censor tweets in individual countries
\nTwitter has refined its technology so it can censor messages on a country-by-country basis.<\/p>\n
The additional flexibility announced Thursday is likely to raise fears that Twitter’s commitment to free speech may be weakening as the short-messaging company expands into new countries in an attempt to broaden its audience and make more money.<\/p>\n
But Twitter sees the censorship tool as a way to ensure individual messages, or \u00abtweets,\u00bb remain available to as many people as possible while it navigates a gauntlet of different laws around the world.<\/p>\n
Before, when Twitter erased a tweet it disappeared throughout the world. Now, a tweet containing content breaking a law in one country can be taken down there and still be seen elsewhere.<\/p>\n
Twitter will post a censorship notice whenever a tweet is removed. That’s similar to what Internet search leader Google Inc. has been doing for years when a law in a country where its service operates requires a search result to be removed.<\/p>\n
Like Google, Twitter also plans to the share the removal requests it receives from governments, companies and individuals at the chillingeffects.org website.<\/p>\n
The similarity to Google’s policy isn’t coincidental. Twitter’s general counsel is Alexander Macgillivray, who helped Google draw up its censorship policies while he was working at that company.<\/p>\n
\u00abOne of our core values as a company is to defend and respect each user’s voice,\u00bb Twitter wrote in a blog post. \u00abWe try to keep content up wherever and whenever we can, and we will be transparent with users when we can’t. The tweets must continue to flow.\u00bb<\/p>\n
Twitter, which is based in San Francisco, is tweaking its approach now that its nearly 6-year-old service has established itself as one of the world’s most powerful megaphones. Daisy chains of tweets already have played instrumental roles in political protests throughout the world, most notably in the uprising that overthrew Egypt’s government a year ago.<\/p>\n
It’s a role that Twitter has embraced, but the company came up with the new filtering technology in recognition that it will likely be forced to censor more tweets as it pursues an ambitious agenda.
